Amar Bail By Umaira Ahmed
Amar Bail (English: Mistletoe) is a love story of Umar Jehangir and Aleezay Sikandar, set-up in the backdrop of Pakistani bureaucratic culture. It is a story of imbalanced relationships, broken families, lust for power, complexes, insecurities and amidst all problems of love, its intensity and sacrifices. It depicts the true face of our bureaucratic system, highlighting social evils like corruption, nepotism and injustice and how at times going against the law is the only way to punish the culprits. The novel touches your heart by its brilliant portrayal of human emotions and psychology.
So this book is about Umar and Aleezay’s love story, well it was one sided first and then yeah, pretty much like the others. But the main thing doesn’t lie on romance. It matters on real issue, the issue I know or everyone in Pakistan knows. So this story take place in Pakistan, where everyone, mostly higher rank officials, are corrupted or are injustice and etc but the issues in this book is very intriguing. Aside from that, it also talks about broken family, insecurities and all those things that is sensitive, well to me not sure about you guys. This book will literally turn you down into 7 hundred million pieces that you wouldn’t be able to fix yourself up.
Time for the characters: Umar, my favourite favourite favourite character in this book. Even though at first I thought he was chichora (foppish, cheap whatsoever) but I was wrong, very wrong. He smoked and I hate people smoking, like I’m allergic to these type of boys. But his meaning behind smoking, I forgot, changed my views, ya know! He smoked, drank and did other bad things but I didn’t hate him. It’s weird, I loved him more. His life was screwed up that never let him settle down. His family is country’s one of the most powerful family. Like if he did anything illegal and get caught, no worry. Go call his father and bingo, he’s safe. He was hurt, he never showed the world what he’s been through and yeah. OH M GEE, I’m fangirling over him, squeaking and jumping. He’s the hero of this book and…..Okay, I need to staaap!!! He loves collecting perfumes, like me ha-ha. Umar, he SACRIFICED his own love for the sake of Aleezay. ( Not gonna tell you why, coz I WANT YOU TO read it, no matter what race, colour, religion you are. Doesn’t have to be a Pakistani.) He loved her so much that he pushed her away because he knew, he freaking knew he couldn’t keep her happy and he thought this was love. Oh my poor innocent heart, oh my poor Umar. Why did he have to do this, WHYYY? He didn’t have any intention to marry anyone, he rejected every proposal. Until this one girl (I forgot her name, I’m so bad) comes whom Umar met overseas, he bought her home and I guess intentionally made Aleezay hurt.
Aleezay Sikandar, hmmm I don’t think I have much things to talk about her like Umar. So Aleezay’s life is pretty much sad like no one would one that but sadly many people are living like her. She lives with her grandmother. She never receive fully love from her parents because her parents are divorce. Her mom was in Australia and her dad was every where. She was like a mistake to her parents ( I think) or else why would her parents ignore her, not talking to her, discard her to one place and basically everything…She went to live with or visit her father’s family and his father has like 2 boys, and they rant about their new house. Aleezay thought maybe his dad also made a room for her but when one of the boys asked where Aleezay would sleep, his dad said IN A GUEST ROOM. Like seriously, in a guest room? is she a guest or your first daughter, your first child. I didn’t like that. DIDN’T .
Then, there’s Junaid, Umar’s one good friend. Umar told his friend to marry Aleezay more like convinced him to meet her and propose to her which he did. He did that, because he was the only guy he trusted, he was the best man and thought Aleezay is best for him, basically he though they were perfect for each other as they shared the same interest. They both first met in a party in Islamabad ( I think) and they sat on a bench. Aleezay talked about why she loves painting landscapes and from there their friendship starts.
